Adversity to Advocacy

Jaam Zaadi’s story describes overcoming strong opposition to girls’ education and building a role as a community advocate. Her mother’s support and encouragement from teachers helped her continue studying despite difficult family circumstances.
The HANDS reference account explains how she and her sister became community workers. Further training in midwifery enabled Jaam Zaadi to support women and connect families with services.
Her work involved sharing information, helping residents navigate practical problems and encouraging women to speak about their needs. Over time, people who had resisted her education began to recognise her contribution.
The story shows how education, training and sustained local support can widen opportunities for women and strengthen their ability to participate in community life.
